Designing the Movies: Auntie Mame (1958) | Revue Cinema | Sunday, 18. March 2018

Join Designing the Movies host Nathalie Atkinson for a matinée and conversation with special guest Tommy Smythe—designer, television presenter and contributing House & Home editor—about visually dazzling AUNTIE MAME. The 1958 cult classic is a Tommy favourite and was also a lasting influence on other talents like Jonathan Adler, who called the movie a rite of passage for every aspiring interior designer.

Based on the hit stage musical of Patrick Dennis’s bestselling memoir and nominated for six Academy Awards, a ten-year-old orphan goes to live with his free-spirited aunt at her 3 Beekman Place duplex. Naturally, the stuffy estate trustee disapproves of the eccentric grande dame’s flamboyant lifestyle. Parties, hi-jinx, thematic costumes — and frequent interior re-decoration — ensue.

With sumptuous costumes by Orry-Kelly (Some Like it Hot, Casablanca), glorious and unforgettable design of ever-changing sets by George James Hopkins (My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly!) and overall art direction by Malcolm C. Bert.
