Join our Jazz Initiative for some great morning training opportunities!

Beginning WEDNESDAY OCT 11, classes will run every Mon, Wed & Fri morning under the following schedule:

Mon - 9:30-10:30am: Pilates with Jana MacGregor
10:45am-12:15pm: Jazz with Kathleen Doherty
(Room 12)

Wed - 9:30-10:30am: Pilates with Jana MacGregor
10:45am-12:15pm: Jazz with Kendra Armstrong
(Concert Hall)

Fri - 10:30am-12pm - rotating workshops/classes:

Oct 20 & 27 - African w Liliona Quarmyne & accompanist Andrew Dahms
Nov 3 - Jazz w Penny Evans

Where - Maritime Conservatory, 6199 Chebucto Rd, Hfx

Drop in rates:
1 hr warm up classes (Pilates/Yoga) $8
1.5 hr Jazz or workshop class $10
Full morning (Mon or Wed) for $15

Yoga & Pilates classes are open to any level (and not just for dancers), Jazz and other workshop classes are for experienced dancers (class will function at an intermediate level).

The Jazz Initiave is made possible with support from The Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage and The Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts.

  • Capoeira with Ross Burns starts tomorrow! 10:30-12pm, $10 drop in, see you there!! (Capoeria with Ross will run Dec 1, 8 & 15) Capoeira is a beautiful Brazilian form that combines martial arts, acrobatics, dance and music. Ross Burns is a professional musician, performer, capoeira player, and teacher. Studying the guitar since a young age and training the Brazilian dance/martial art form capoeira seriously since 2003 Ross is becoming a familiar **** on Canadian stages as a guitarist, percussionist, singer, dancer and front man. As a dancer Ross has performed in The Halifax Jazz Festival, The Scotia Festival of Music, Brazilian Carnaval Halifax, Kinetic Studio Series, Halifax and Yarmouth Multicultural Festivals and more. He has studied capoeira all over Canada, and made regular study visits to New York City and Brazil. He has taught extensively in schools and recreation programs all over Nova Scotia and as far afield as Ottawa, Ontario and Recife, Brazil.

  • Also, a couple of people were asking about Kizomba, Charles Ogar is teaching a Beginners Bootcamp tonight, Friday Nov 17 from 7:30-9:30pm at Happy Soul Dance Studios, 3089 Oxford st (entrance on Bayers rd) Here is a video of a practice with Charles and I this week. The simplest way to describe Kizomba in a few words is African Tango.
  • Just a reminder that there is no class tomorrow, Nov 13 as The Conservatory is closed in lieu of Remembrance Day. See you all on Wednesday!
  • Afro-House class with Charles Ogar from Texas, Nov 20! -10:45am to 12:15pm at Maritime Conservatory, room 12, 6199 Chebucto Rd (drop-in for $10) -6pm to 7pm at Happy Soul Dance Studios, 3089 Oxford st (entrance on Bayers rd) $20 Afro-House come from the southern Africa countries and is a modern African dance in the tradition of Afrobeats that is a mix between House and African dance and music. There are different genres in this style depending on the country including Rara and Kuduro. It's fun, challenging and energetic :) Everyone welcome! No experience needed!
