Get your ACT on – an Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Training for Behaviour Analysts

Shiri Bartman M.A., C. Psych. Assoc. (Supervised Practice), BCBA
Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) has emerged as a powerful, evidence based clinical behaviour analytic intervention. ACT is a behaviour therapy firmly rooted in the well-established behaviour analytic theory of human language and cognition known as RFT (relational frame theory). One of the most important implications of RFT is that relations among language, cognition and emotions are learned. From the perspective of RFT and ACT, psychological health is largely determined by how our cognition interacts with our current environment to help us pursue our long term values and goals. Entanglement with the content of our thoughts and attempts to avoid these undesirable private events only serves to increase distress. This workshop will introduce the ACT model of psychological flexibility and align each of the processes with behaviour analytic principles.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the ACT hexiflex model of Psychological Flexibility 2. Describe the behavioural principles involved in each of the ACT processes
